“Falling Water: Stories & Poetry” takes a incisive, penetrating look at life and that offers an insightful look at the realities we all face- the highs and the lows, hope, happiness, joy and the inevitable grief and suffering that must accompany the good.
Most of the stories and poems in this were compiled from handwritten notes in journals I’ve been keeping for several years. The title story, “The Waterfall”, is a powerful study of loss, acceptance, and growth.
In “Butterflies”, a young boy learns a lesson about acceptance and appreciation of what he has been given.
“The Lighthouse” is a moving tale that’s as close to poetry as prose and offers a beautifully upbeat ending.
“Grandma Brown” is a nostalgic and emotionally moving tale of familial love.
“A Boy and His Dog” tells the story of a young boy learning to accept that nothing is ever truly lost.
“Waiting” is a powerful and moving tale of a man’s love and acceptance in the face of the finality of dying.
“The Source” is a classic short horror story.
“And When I Got Home” features a young man finding his own path to spiritual enlightenment.
A short collection of poems range from the unusual to the more traditional and beautiful.
And “Wisteria” is a moving story of a man visiting his now abandoned childhood home and realizing that nothing ever truly dies.
The poems were compiled especially for this book from handwritten journals I’ve kept over the years. They balance the stories and lend a greater understanding and appreciation of life in all its complexity. These are tales of love, and loss, hope, strength, acceptance and the courage to carry on in the face of adversity. There is sadness in these vignettes, but also hope in the redeeming goodness of life. I think there’s something here for every taste and hope that all who listens to these words will find meaning in them!

5 of 5 Stars!I don’t want this to end!

This is a wonderful collection of short stories. I’m almost halfway through and haven’t found one that I don’t like. The one with the 2 guys camping is just beautiful. Very moving.
I’m actually reading this as slowly as I can because I don’t want it to end! I feel as though each tale should be savored and thought about. The writing style is excellent with such depth and intensity that the stories, although short, feel as though they are full length. The description involved is fabulous. This is a really good read and the length of the tales make them perfect for lunch times or coffee breaks.

Highly recommend!

This mixed genre collection is an ingenious way to showcase the author’s broad talents. Within this book are stories, and poems. Some of these are happy, others sad, while still others make you feel wistful. It’s unusual for a writer to be able to embrace such a wide spectrum of styles and do them well. Author Blaine Coleman has accomplished this. I wouldn’t suggest reading this in one sitting. This is something to savor, one story or poem at a time. Take a moment after reading each one and think about the meaning and the visual created by the writer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Falling Water: Stories & Poetry

Falling Water: Stories & Poetry, by Blaine Coleman, is a unique combination of stories and poetry. I like the mix, because it explores whether the two genres can exist side by side. In the case of this book, the mix is just right. Let me quote the author here: “The poems were compiled from handwritten notes in journals I’ve been keeping for several years. Some of the stories are heartbreakingly-sad, while others have a definite upbeat ending. ” (end of quote) Coleman offers the reader a wide variety of genres in this book. It ranges from classic horror to the unusual poetry to the traditional. I do agree that there is something here for everyone. Elias Canetti is quoted by the author. Canetti said: “All literature wavers between nature and paradise and loves to mistake one for the other.” Now, that’s a profound thought to ponder on. Whatever and wherever your reflection leads you to, there is little doubt that this book is situated (in my opinion) halfway between nature and paradise.

My favorite story in the book is “Waterfall”. It is about loss and hope, about strength, courage and resilience, about carrying on and about letting go. It has a cultural reference to the theme song from the movie “Deliverance”. It’s an amazing “banjo vs guitar duel” that is so good that an old man gets up and starts dancing. Yet be warned, “Deliverance” is not a movie for the fainthearted. Nor is this story. It teaches about tolerance and makes a clear case, implicitly, for knowledge. It doesn’t matter whether it’s AIDS or Ebola or any other malady that afflicts humans. We must always seek enlightenment and tolerance by informing ourselves. What brings all this together, symbolically, is a waterfall. Highly recommended.

Following random roads. Contemplating a sky full of stars, This is a charming read. The tales are reminiscent of another time. It takes me back to my childhood in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. Falling Water: Stories & Poetry by Blaine Coleman is something to be savored. They are like sitting down with an old friend and hearing stories for the first time (or even again). Good memories, the butterflies of summer, a good dog, Grandma’s homemade biscuits. There is sadness, too in these yarns, but mostly I found hope in the redeeming goodness of life. Wander into this book and you’re sure to find something you forgot, something you care about. Nice find. Five stars.

Reading Blaine Coleman’s stories and poetry is like falling back into a childhood filled with both the nostalgia of loving life and the tender grief as one pierces the veil into adulthood. As I go through the pages, I walk with his characters through their tribulations and their victories. Coleman’s ability to evoke emotions and responses from his readers is a tribute to his love of the craft in addition to his picturesque settings and believable characters.

Coleman’s imagery is to die for. I have read his other works and fell in love with his way with words! He doesn’t tell me about a waterfall. He grabs my hand and transports me to the scene he created. All of the stories have distinct voices that are quite relatable. These stories and poems are smooth and interesting reads!
Anything you find of Coleman’s will be EXCELLENT!

What a great collection Coleman has here. I loved the unique combination of genres; from horror fiction to poetry, it all worked well together and kept me interested. Coleman’s style is definitely very close and personal, and I appreciated his skill with narration and use of language. There is definitely something in here for everyone, and I highly recommend it for fans of any genre–it doesn’t disappoint. Five stars from me!

Childhood memories brought back to life!

Well Crafted and Engaging
By Delinda L. McCann
I found this collection of short stories and poetry thoroughly delightful. Coleman’s descriptions of the countryside are vivid and enticing. His topics range from death to rebirth with a bit of horror thrown in for spice. He covers a little bit of everything in the tradition of a good storyteller.
Several of his stories involve Roland McCray, who we see as a boy, and later as a man. His characters are fathers, sons, childhood friends, grandparents and lovers. He includes a dog, butterflies, an alien, and a wisteria among his other characters. All of his stories are thought provoking, challenging the reader to see life in all its richness.
I highly recommend this well-crafted and thought provoking collection for that last read before bedtime or while waiting for the bus. These short stories are perfect for a short read to give the reader time to meditate before the reading the next gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly enjoyable collection of stories and poems
Beautifully written, this collection of stories and poems is an eclectic mix of genres and technique, but mostly just good, sound storytelling. One of the things I liked most is the vivid imagery conveyed by the author–much of it capturing the beauty of the natural world. I could almost feel the cool moist mountain air, smell the musty earth of a cave, the pungent scent from a stand of pines, and the sea spray at Chesapeake Bay. The author also has a great ability to conjure up emotions–some tender and sweet, others sad and melancholy. Suspense, too, anger, fear and a whole lot of nostalgia as his characters relive moments from their past, or as childhood friends fly kites and chase butterflies longing to fly. A thoroughly enjoyable collection.

Falling water = tender emotions and solid story telling
Fancy a nostalgic and gentle glide down memory lane? These tender and thought provoking tales will strike a chord in your cavalcade of early memories. The tales will swirl around the edges of your consciousness, striking in their familiarity yet fresh and evocative. From the first well- crafted word to the end of every thought provoking tale, I remained bemused and seduced. I think you will too.!
